Some Truly Surprising Information on the Use of Vibrators

On 26 June, 2009 the New York Times published an article on the use of vibrators by men and women in the United States. Most of the data was very interesting and actually surprising to me.

It all goes back to two new national surveys from Indiana University recently published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine. Quoting the report the New York Times says that fifty-three percent of women and nearly half of all men report having used a sex toy vibrator.

And what the surveys make clear is that the vibrator is being used by couples for shared pleasure. Eighty-one percent of women and 91 percent of men who’ve used one, report having done so with a partner.

The surveys, conducted in April 2008, document vibrator use and the related sexual practices of 2,056 women and 1,047 men. 93 percent of those surveyed said they are heterosexual.

“A company has launched what it describes as the world’s first “green” vibrator. The eight-inch multispeed dynamo Earth Angel is powered by a hand crank.”

That is the exact beginning of the news article. Well, you have to forgive me, but I instantly pictured the desperate condition of the anxious user of the vibrator, while her partner was industriously making turns on a mechanical crank protruding from the exposed end of the device. A real sadness came over me as I thought of it.

The article goes on to quote the inventors as saying: “Unlike traditional ‘green’ toys, it will never require replacement batteries as it houses its own patented power core.”

Maybe the ‘dynamo’ is really a miniature hamster running on an exercise wheel inside the apparatus.

Under any circumstance, I tip my hat to the inventor. The world needs to reduce the massive use of electricity by sex toys, and clearly the reduction of emissions will be enough to bring a smile to Al Gore.
